A gastric balloon or intragastric balloon is placed by a Gastroenterologist or Gastro doctor this is done by placing a deflated balloon in the stomach using an endoscopy procedure and then filling it with blue-colored sterile solution (BIB system) or air through a catheter attached to a balloon. After filling the balloon your gastro doctor pulls the catheter on the inner end and removes the catheter. The Gastric balloon or intragastric balloon has a self-sealing valve which prevents the leakage of liquid or air.

This whole procedure takes only 20 to 30 minutes.

The balloon floats in the stomach which decreases the amount of intragastric space. A gastric balloon or Intragastric balloon aims to reduce the feeling of hunger and helps to feel the fullness of the stomach with a very small amount of food or only with a liquid diet. After placement of balloon for few days person need take only liquid diet. After a few days, person can continue with a normal diet as advised by the doctor.

There are different types and sizes of balloons in the market. All balloons are temporary. It can be left in the stomach for 6 months and results in an average weight loss of 10-15 kg in half a year. You can again place this balloon as per the advice of the Gastroenterologist or Gastro doctor.
