What is NBI Endoscopy?

Narrowband imaging (NBI) is one of the most advanced technologies available for endoscopy and related treatments. The NBI light is absorbed by blood vessels and reflected by mucosa. This ensures that stark contrast is observable between the two structures and surface as well as deeply embedded tumors and lesions are clearly visible. Moreover, the visual image of the NBI endoscopy is much clearer than the regular endoscopy making the process more efficient.

High Definition (HD) narrow-band imaging endoscopy provides high-quality images in the process. However, magnification endoscopy takes it a step further by magnifying the high-resolution endoscopy images up to 150 times the original image. With the help of NBI-magnifying endoscopy, even the smallest lesions can be detected in the early stages.

NBI Endoscopy Technique and Steps

As with all endoscopic techniques, in Narrow Band Imaging endoscopy as well, it is imperative that the patient restrict their food and liquid consumption as instructed by the doctor minimum 6-8 hours before the procedure. The rest of the procedure is the same as a regular endoscopy. Once the endoscope reaches the desired location, magnification endoscopy aspect of the process comes into practice. The image is magnified and then narrow-band imaging is used. The endoscope is equipped with a switch to change to NBI mode. While images in regular endoscopy are pink, they are brownish-gray in NBI and are also highly defined.

Applications of Narrow Band Imaging Endoscopy

Narrow Band Imaging endoscopy is a revolutionary technique to diagnose Barrett’s esophagus- a condition in which mucosal cells that line esophagus change abnormally. NBI helps the gastrointestinal doctor identify areas of metaplasia and conduct targeted biopsy thus reducing the cost associated with the diagnosis of the disease significantly.

  • Early Esophageal and Gastric Carcinoma
  • Lesions in stomach, large bowel, small bowel
  • Intestinal metaplasia
  • Gastric Ulcers
  • Gastric Dysplasia
  • Polyps
